本曲作於一八二七年，是蕭邦所作十二首「練習曲」中的第三首。據說蕭邦在完成此曲後，曾興奮的說，自己再也寫不出比這更好的旋律了。
有一次，古德曼彈奏本曲後，蕭邦突然抓著古德曼的手臂，激動而深情的感嘆：「啊！我的祖國！」，後人才知道本曲是在抒發作者的思鄉之情，從此，這首練習曲就被冠以「離別」的標題。
離別曲是蕭邦的鋼琴"練習曲第10號作品之3" (Etudes Op.10 No.3〝L'adieux〞Etudes)。
Etudes是練習曲的意思，Op.指的是作品代號，Op.10裏共有12首曲子，所以這首曲子其實是蕭邦練習作品10當中的第3首。原先是沒有標題的，〝L'adieux〞所以"離別"是後人副加上去的
它有一則小故事，當年才１９歲的蕭邦，愛上了一位華沙音樂學院的女同學葛拉柯芙絲卡，蕭邦生性害羞始終不敢向她表達愛慕之意，當他決定離開祖國波蘭前往巴黎時，在葛拉柯芙絲卡的面前，彈奏了這首纏綿幽怨的鋼琴曲，向這位夢中情人告別。
這首歌有很多版本除了原文的 Tristesse, 還有英文的 So deep is the night，及 How sad is my heart，及陳珊妮中文版的離別曲。說個笑話，第一次聽陳珊妮的離別曲那張CD，當時電子音樂的節奏，讓我沒第一時間認出是蕭邦的離別曲，想說陳珊妮這張CD就這曲最棒了，有世界級的水準。果不然，是蕭邦的曲！哈！
